5 Recession Tips …for small businesses

We have all been hearing about and anticipating the 2023 recession.  As we head into the New Year, Amazon, Salesforce and Vimeo announced major cuts in excess of 25,000 jobs.  Yet, the recent job numbers came out strong and the market has been rallying based on, I believe, the Feds efforts to slow down the recession.

There is so much contradictory information and we are just not sure what to believe.  Even if you look at the numbers you can argue both ways.  While, I am not an economist, I do know that during these times small businesses have to exhale and come up with a plan.

I would like to share my top 5 recession tips that I use for my own business during contracted markets.  Some of these are easily transferrable to how you approach your household budget during a recession too.

  1. Cash flow – start securing access to cash now; or, if you have cash, start reserving it and HOLD onto it.

  2. Receivables – Be more aware and make sure your outstanding receivables DO NOT go beyond 30 days; know what is going on with your suddenly slow paying customers especially when to expect payment.

  3. Expenses – Make sure there are no surprise expenses popping up!  Be prepared!

  4. Ask the question – Do I really need to invest in this (fill in the blank) to generate revenue or is it a “soft” value-added benefit to my business?  If it generates $ do it; if it is something nice to have for whatever reason, simply wait out the recession.

  5. Be Transparent – whether you have a big workforce, partners, suppliers or contractors you work with, be honest and let them know how they can contribute to your company’s sustainability during this recession.  Believe me, I know first-hand that they are willing to help because your company ultimately contributes to their livelihood.

Do not wait until it is too late. Start making sure you are ready if the economy gets worse.  Being prepared helps you weather the recession season that much better; but, ultimately, the economy is out of your control.  Even still, our fixed costs for our businesses are out of our control too; so we need to identify, concentrate and adjust the business activities that are within our control.

Do not be afraid to still be bold.  Think of the many businesses that were started and have now grown into big brand names during other recessions including Netflix and Microsoft; heck even during the great depression iconic brands were started like Publix Supermarkets and Ocean Spray Cranberries.  Businesses can start and/or grow at any time in a market.  Continue to be smart by being prepared and changing your approach where needed.

And, while our anticipation of the 2023 recession is real; remember Bo Bennett’s words:

As sure as the spring will follow the winter, prosperity and economic growth will follow recession.”

So, hold on tight, another season is coming!

My Top 5 Covid-Related Best Practices

Sign in the Ladies Bathroom at the SONO Mall, Norwalk, CT

The pandemic experience was mostly bad but it forced us to tackle Covid-related obstacles. It pushed us to be resourceful.   Business minds have long believed that when you feel the most uncomfortable that it will lead to growth and innovation.

“The unknown makes people uncomfortable.”- Holly Hunter

Holly Hunter’s above sentiment got it right.  The unknown makes us the most uncomfortable.  It brings out all kinds of negative feelings like fear, doubt, and despair, to name a few.  The pandemic had all of us uncomfortable because something like that had not happened in a century.  We did not know what we were facing.  It was an unknown beast that took down our way of living out our daily lives.  And while it did that, it also required us to create a new way of living and working.

The pandemic helped us to create new ideas, make old ideas better and implement tactics that would allow customers to feel comfortable; and company doors to stay open.

Here are my Top 5 Covid-Related Best Practices that Emerged:

  1. Sanitizer Stations & Wipes – Now found at places from retail outlets to churches!

  2. QR Code Menus - No need to touch another menu touched by many. Just scan the menu QR code on the table and you’re all set.

  3. Curbside Pick-up – Yes, it existed pre-Covid; but, it has become more efficient, convenient and more natural to use!

  4. Google classroom – Ultimately there is no substitute for in-classroom teaching; Yet, Google Classroom helped our students stay connected to teachers, classmates and learning!

  5. Hotel cleaning – Honestly I always wondered why our hotel room had to be cleaned every single day; new towels, etc.  Requesting hotel cleaning is so much more effective not only for convenience sake but for the environment too.

Most importantly it allowed each of us to respect the other’s space.  It truly made it real that tomorrow is not promised; and, it showed us that we need each other.  While the COVID virus has not left us, we are desperately trying to adapt to a new world.  In doing so, we are creating sustainable best practices that contribute to each of our lives and businesses.

As we continue to innovate in this ever-evolving world let us not forget that when we feel the most uncomfortable, it will stretch us and lead to our growth.  May you continue to grow in the New Year! Cheers to a healthy and growth-filled year!

Do you show up for the people you love?

My Mom always had a smile on her face.

December 16, 2022 will mark five years since I lost my Mom.  It seems like yesterday.  Life’s significant events feature time and memories like nothing else.  When we celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and honor death anniversaries it makes us look back.

I always say that I am thankful, grateful and blessed.  As I remember my Mom, I am truly all of those feelings because I am able to look back on a life filled with an awesome Mom.  She was strict, funny and loved each of us.  Most importantly, my Mom showed up.  She supported our dreams, activities and lifted us up!

  • She showed up at school to speak with my teachers.

  • She showed up at my volleyball games, track meets and basketball games.

  • She showed up doing all of the traditional Mom stuff – cooking, baking and making sure we were fed!

It sounds easy.  She did this for all six of her children.  Speaking as a Mom of one child, I do not know how she did it.   She made it look easy too.  She made each one of us feel as though we were her favorite.  Oh yeah, and did I mention she also worked.  My father and my mother were life-long partners.  A marriage built on working side-by-side.  It, I am sure, was hard and messy but I was sheltered from all that being the last child of six.  As I look at my siblings and my own marriage I see that we chose partners that would show up.  That is no mistake.

I was fortunate enough this summer to visit my childhood home.  We were traveling to a family gathering in northeast Ohio; and, we had made plans to show our daughter the house I grew up in.  We stopped and the owner invited us to enjoy the property.  The backyard held so many memories – really a life time of fun with:

My visit to my childhood home - the backyard.

  • The annual Labor Day Fish Fry

  • My parents smoking whole ears of corn in the ground – I still can’t replicate that taste

  • Roasting pigs and throwing huge picnics

  • Kicking off family reunions that are now bi-annual get-togethers all around the country.

So, as I honor my Mother’s death anniversary on December 16, 2022, I am truly celebrating her.  I am celebrating her laugh, her willingness to have fun, her kindness, compassion and love of family, friends and neighbors.   I also celebrate Mom each and every single day by showing up for my daughter, my husband and the people that I love.

Mom, I miss you but I know that a part of you lives inside of me and it truly brings a smile to my face.

Think about the people in your life who make you feel happy and loved.  Are you creating the feeling of being loved and happy for someone else?  Do you show up each and every single day for the people you love?

Happy 9th Anniversary, Jarvis Consultants!

It began in December 2013, where I took the leap of faith in my God-given gift of entrepreneurship.  I took my education, corporate experiences and grit and turned my focus to helping independent, boutique-style businesses with the development of Jarvis Consultants, LLC.

December 2022 marks the 9th anniversary of Jarvis Consultants, LLC registering with the state of Connecticut as a business.  Happy Birthday, Jarvis Consultants!

My career was founded in publicly traded and large companies.  I always felt thankful and lucky to work at companies that let me develop my own unique role.  It was an awesome privilege to add on what was lacking; and, what I thought would contribute most to growing and moving each company forward.  What I did not know at the time was that it was not necessarily the company that allowed me to do it.  It was me.  My sheer determination to transform the results through innovating and looking at each situation from an entrepreneur’s perspective versus a corporate employee’s perspective made the difference.

I (was) am thankful for these experiences because each time I innovated and developed something new it pushed me to recognize the entrepreneurial spirit inside of me.  My corporate career showed me the professional I was and wanted to continue to be:

  • Original and Authentic

  • Different and Innovative

  • Forward-Thinking

I wanted to take all of these valued characteristics and present them in my business dealings with freedom and couple it with my love of marketing.  Jarvis Consultants offers the following services and more.

  • Manage complex and multi-faceted projects from the beginning to the end

  • Identify, research and implements new revenue streams

  • Creates C-suite level reciprocal collaboration opportunities

  • Representation of your brand when you need independent contract support.

  • Advisor to small business owners

As an entrepreneur, I have continued to grow professionally and personally over these past nine years; specifically, in my ability and capability in becoming a Thought Leader & Industry Expert; covering topics like:

  • Marketing

  • DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion)

  • Retail

  • e-Commerce

And a Book Author, having written and or contributed to the following books:

  • Pandemic Blessings

  • Mentoring Moments

  • Mindful Minutes

There are numerous and various consulting firms.  What makes Jarvis Consultants different?  Jarvis Consultants is different because of my unique approach with each client and how I manage each project with the goal of creating original innovative solutions from typical services like:

  • Developing Content & Delivering Connections

  • Re-inventing marketing approaches

  • Identifying new business opportunities that are sustainable

  • Create Long-term sustainability with programs and partnerships

  • Producing High-performing results while increasing the customer experience

It is clear to all of us that time stops for no one and sometimes I have to pinch myself because I cannot believe it has been nine years since Jarvis Consultants was established.  I say it all the time, I am grateful, thankful and blessed.   "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:12-13.

Happy 9th Anniversary, Jarvis Consultants! Cheers to many more!

When was the last time you thought about devoting “kindness” time to your clients?

Sunday, November 13th was World Kindness Day; and, my daughter’s school used it to kick off all kinds of “kind” activities.  Monday began an Appreciation Week.  Their week included faculty and staff, students and parents; all of the different segments of people who contribute to a vibrant and caring community.  I can’t begin to mention all of the activities that went on this week but I will share a few to give you a glimpse of the types of kindness activities that can be done that go above and beyond.

The school set aside two days to appreciate teachers with a breakfast on Tuesday and a lunch on Thursday.  There was also student appreciate day that gave the kids the opportunity to dress down and play games with prizes for winners.  On Thursday morning, students met parents at the cars and handed them coffee, bagels and a granola bar to show their appreciation.  And, finally on Friday the students will go out to more than 40 organizations in the greater Fairfield County area and volunteer their services for whatever the organization needs.

When was the last time you thought about devoting “kindness” time to your clients?

I’m not talking about a moment or a thought.  What about an entire week or certain days throughout the year exclusively set aside to show your clients that they are appreciated?  What does that look like, right?  Your clients know they are appreciated because you tell them on your monthly invoice.  Well, I’m suggesting put some thought in it; a strategy behind it and plan kindness activities that they will appreciate.

Here’s a list of ways you can let you client know that they are appreciated with some pretty simple kind actions.

  • Hand write a “you are appreciated” card.  (No texting, send it snail mail or hand deliver it).

  • Send them over breakfast, lunch, chocolates or whatever they like. (Better yet if they are local drop it off).

  • Call them and let them you know that they are appreciated and be specific. (Tell them why they are appreciated that way it’s authentic).

  • Make a donation to your favorite charity in their name.  (Giving Tuesday is coming up!).

Show that you appreciate your customers.  Don’t just do it once a year at Holiday Season but think about it through-out the year, the things that you can do or say to let them know that they are appreciated.

Kindness is easy.  It takes a little time but it doesn’t necessarily mean spending a lot of money.  Take the time to show how much you appreciate your clients and others in your life too.

I appreciate you because you take the time to read Sonya’s Blog!  Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

What are you taking for granted?

Beardsley’s Cider Mill & Orchard, Shelton, CT - fall 2022

As Thanksgiving approaches, we all turn towards the people and things in our lives that we are thankful for and want to recognize. Many of us start making our list of blessings.

Yet, how many daily experiences do we take for granted?

My family and I live in New England. The fall season is breathtaking with the summer leaves changing before our eyes to golden and burnt red colors. It is a beautiful site to witness. We are accustomed to welcoming in the change of seasons; and, the vibrant colors of the fall are awesome.

Yes, we look forward to it!  We also expect it and live with and among this period just like the other three seasons.  But this one is different. Nature makes it that way.

On the drive up to Litchfield County, CT

New England welcomes visitors from all around the world. Our state of Connecticut alone welcomes tourists that travel from near and far to see the crisp colors of the fall leaves. Best places and times to see the leaves are reported on and mapped out. I recently spoke to a tourist from Colorado who was visiting Connecticut.  Let’s face it, Colorado is a beautiful nature state too. She was sharing with me how they have been driving around areas of New England to catch the breathtaking fall leaves at peak. Being a little cynical I said, “Colorado must also be beautiful this time of year”. She said, “Not like this”. There you have it. I am living in a fall wonderland and while I think I recognize the beauty, I am not recognizing it as THE BEAUTY that people are getting on a plane to see. It is that majestic!

Pequonnock Valley Wildlife, Trumbull CT - fall 2022

Do I take it for granted?

Yes, sometimes, but for the most part I know that I am incredibly blessed to walk on a trail in a postcard perfect fall scene. Or, drive down a road where golden leaves are lining my ride.

I am thankful for the beautiful season of fall. I am super thankful that I get to experience it in the “Mecca” of the fall of wonderland.

As we prepare for this season of thanksgiving let us be thankful for our daily routines and experiences. Don’t take it for granted. Enjoy it, others do.  Now, it is time to start raking up those leaves.

Reflections of God’s Grace: My Personal Encounter with Breast Cancer – Journal Entry August 14, 2000

As we recognize this month as Breast Cancer Awareness month and everything is pinked-out, I will continue to share entries from a diary that I journaled in for the year of 2000.  I was diagnosed in January 2000 and didn’t finish the entire treatment protocol until December 2000.  It was a tough twelve months both mentally and physically.  Once done, I celebrated with ten days at a Spa in Miami.

Here is an entry from my journal on August 14, 2000.

“I’m forever grateful for God’s love.  HE has been truly awesome in growing my relationship with Christ and with HIM.  I have so many “real life” testimonials.  HE doesn’t have to prove or show me anything; yet, HE is constantly reminding me that HE is carrying me and that HE’ll continue to protect me.  I have so many praises to give HIM; yet, I feel that I still don’t make time to give HIM all the honor, praise and glory!

When I worried that my lymph nodes might be positive; HE answered my prayers (and many others) and they were negative.

When I worried that I was so young to be diagnosed HE put people in the chemo treatment room that had been living with cancer for over 25 years!

When I worried about the future.  HE said trust in me, I have plans for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you.  HE is with me with every breath.  And, I can only praise HIM by saying how good HE is –

HE’s good all the time.  I’m so thankful that I can embrace HIS goodness and accept the strength, the confidence and the love that comes from HIM.

God is doing great things in my life.  Growing into a deeper relationship with Christ because of this will somehow lead me to God’s purpose for my life; so that I can truly glorify HIM in all that I do.

He gives me energy when I need it; HE gives me a clear mind when I need it, because HE knows what my needs are.  I continuously give thanks to HIM for all HE has been, is and will be to me.

Reoccurrence of this disease is not an option.  Because I believe that God has healed my body and I only need to continue to claim that and “move forward” towards HIS will and purpose for my life.  I only hope I can hear this direction and then act on it.

HE has been good –

HE has been faithful to all generations!”

For all of you receiving a breast cancer diagnosis; and, those of you going through treatment, I see you and I have been there too.  Stay strong, focus on you and you will move forward!

Reflections of God’s Grace: My Personal Encounter with Breast Cancer - Journal Entry July 24, 2000

Baha Mar, Nassau, Bahamas: August 2022

October is pink month focused on building awareness and fundraising for research that will lead to a breast cancer cure.

Many of you know that I was diagnosed in January 2000 with stage 1 breast cancer; had a lumpectomy, followed by aggressive chemotherapy (because I was so young); and, ultimately finished the treatment with radiation.  I was Her2 negative; so, there was, at the time, no recommended and/or available treatment after radiation like there is for Her2 positive diagnoses.

I journaled through my experience in the year of 2000.  Here’s an entry from my journal on July 24, 2000.

“Wow!  I can’t believe that it has been almost a month since I’ve made time to sit down and write down my feelings.  In some ways I can’t believe that chemo treatments are done.  It’s as though I have emerged from a dream only to face reality.  Looking back and knowing that the time has passed and yet realizing that you are in the present.

I only have one answer to realizing where I am now and where I was and that’s Almighty God, our Father of Israel has carried me through:

  • The initial diagnosis

  • Surgery

  • Chemotherapy Treatments

And now, today I started the final phase of treatment with a radiologist oncologist consultation.  6 ½ weeks of M-F of radiation to the breast to treat the local area.  Each phase of the process I experience different emotions.  Today, it was more of an emotion of sadness of what’s ahead.

  • Sadness for all of the people in the building that are sick too.

  • Sadness that I have little control over all of the things that are happening – isn’t that weird?  Because I know viscerally that God is in control of all things.

Also, I feel that I was emotional in so many ways today because the fatigue is bothering me.  It’s day #4 after the final chemo treatment and I’m battling the side effects from that.  I’m tired a lot but I’m really trying to stay with walking along the East River every day for 3 miles or so. (Approximately 1 hr.).  It helps me clear my head and also it helps me think through thoughts and process emotions.”

For all of you receiving a breast cancer diagnosis; and, those of you going through treatment, I see you and I have been there too.  Stay strong, focus on you and you will move forward!

What are your terms?

Image Credit: Jarvis Consultants - Resorts World Casino & Hotel NYC

I do think a number of positive things come with aging. One for me is that I am more confident and comfortable with my own terms.

I am confident in how I want to do business and live my life.  I am comfortable displaying those sentiments through my behavior, having tough conversation (if needed) and saying no when it means that my capacity is on overload; and, it will not serve good for any situation. While, I love challenges, being able to discern between what will energize me and what will drain me is important. Self-care is recognized this month and there is a reason that it is needed as a national recognition month.  Many neglect self and pour every ounce in to other people, other things, just other than self.  Take a breath, exhale and determine your terms for living a thriving, healthy and fulfilling life while you have it here on this planet.

Image Credit: Jarvis Consultants - Sugar Factory, Resorts World Casino & Hotel NYC

I know my terms regarding boundaries and expectations in both my personal and work life. Yes, they intersect for all of us; and, it is always up to us to set boundaries and expectations. Now, I am more courageous than ever before in my life in setting those boundaries. This comfortableness has been a lifetime in the making but I have finally arrived.  I am clear on my terms regarding who I open my life to; open my family to; even who I open my dinner table to. I guard my free time for the most precious people in my life; and/or the charitable organizations that are near or dear to my heart.

I listen. I listen to the discerning voice that has always been with me.   Unfortunately, in the past I have not always given it a priority.  When that discerning voice is singing in my head or punching me in my gut; I stop, listen and act on it.

My terms are simple enough. All of them involve words like trust, honesty, authenticity, reciprocity, kindness and, of course, love. I have been writing about these concepts for years.  I have also been working for years to master these principles in my own life, my own dealings, and my own discernment.

Here is an article that I authored a while back but, once again, it is timeless and speaks to truth, honestly, kindness and authenticity. All from a business perspective.  Yet, it all can be and should be transferred to our personal lives too.

In your quiet time, are you willing to listen to your discerning voice?  Are you willing to act on it?  Do you let your discerning voice tell you who to get into business with? Who to accept a networking meeting with? Have you taken the time to literally write down what your boundaries and expectations are?  If you have, kudos to you because it took me a long time.  If you have not done so, please take the time.  It is up to you to decide.  It makes life that much more enjoyable, healthy and fulfilling.

Breathe, exhale and spend some quiet time and then answer the question:  What are your terms?

When does your "new year" start?

While January 1st always kicks off the calendar year, “back to school” for me, seems more like a more natural start to a new year.

We are trained from an early age that the end of summer means the start of a new school year; and the beginning of a new year of experiences.  Going back to school in the fall, is an instinctive habit that we come to expect because we have done it for so long.  This timing has been a huge part of our formative years.  I do not think that ever leaves us.

As we grow up and become professionals, we work on strategic plans and budgets.  These in-depth and sometimes complex activities (definitely time-consuming) are all driven by the company’s fiscal calendar.  It is just a feeling, but it is my opinion that if I took a poll, most professionals would feel “back to school” aligns with the start of a new beginning or a new year.  I can say that I even felt like this working in the corporate world before I even became a Mom.

Well, this week is “back to school” for my daughter.  She starts her sophomore year of high school.  She is looking forward to new beginnings; exploring new sports, meeting new people and dissecting a frog!  Her school’s theme this year is BE HERE, and BE YOU.

Honestly, I too am feeling that same inherent pull that this is the natural order to start a new year with new beginnings and exploring new things.  BE HERE, and BE YOU can apply to all of us as we “go off to school this fall” to start a new year.

A new beginning that I will be exploring will take place on Jarvis Consultants social media channels and will launch this fall on Saturdays and Sundays.  #SaturdaySentiments will explore our mindfulness with little snippets that challenges us all to be present in the moment; and #LeadershipNugget will post on #SundayMornings focusing on tips on how to be organized and be prepared for the unexpected upcoming work week.

These posts are a direct result of a theme that consistently emerges with my clients from different sectors of business.  Why are Jarvis Consultants’ output services and deliverables consistently different and reliable?  Our approach takes critical and creative thinking exchanges that leads to developing innovative planning, processes and programs.  And, while some of the posts might seem quirky and others seem logical; for Jarvis Consultants it all works together in developing something that is innovative and sustainable.  We hope you enjoy them and as the “new year” starts we challenge you to BE HERE, and BE YOU.

What are you working on?

Through my business, Jarvis Consultants, I have been working on some interesting, life contributing and changing projects.  I am thankful that my expertise and knowledge can provide consulting services to such a dynamic group of Jarvis Consultants clients.

Most of you know that I am a relationship builder. It is important for me to get to know the person representing the brand. Every relationship is different but they are all fundamentally built on the same foundation. It begins with listening and getting to know who the person/organization is and what they want to achieve. And, ultimately how they approach their business objectives; and, quite frankly, life.  I have written about relationship building in the past. Here is a blog on How are you building relationships? And, a timeless article on Getting Involved - 5 ways you can create something powerful through strong relationships.

Due to non-disclosure agreements I cannot share my clients’ names or profiles but here is a snapshot of some of the projects I have been working on:

Content Creation is one of my all-time favorite type of project that is exciting to develop.  It comes in many forms. Lately, I have been working on putting together c-level panels from different types of categories to share insights and foresight regarding his/her specific industry. Because of my ability to foster executive level relationships, this project has been fulfilling for both me and my clients.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) has many approaches and methodologies.  One way to ensure that organizations can have effective DEI programs is to ensure they have the right processes in place.  Specifically, I am working on a project where I help clients work through assessment and implementation of their DEI programs.  This is a really big undertaking where we identify gaps, address them and create action plans that rectify equitable representation, hiring and pay practices that will become part of the organization’s fabric – a very long and involved process.  DEI work is life-changing.  When an organization commits to taking a long look in the mirror and put in the hard work to make sustainable changes for the better of its people and the longevity of the organization, that is brave!

As a business coach, one of the ways I make an impact is that I specialize in helping women in the workforce negotiate compensation packages and navigate tricky organizational structures and/or issues to come out ahead.  In addition, I help them read the red flags before it is too late. I love the success that one of my clients just had in recognizing that she was being under-appreciated. Instead of guessing, I helped her recognize a pattern that was emerging; and, she was able to get ahead of the potential issue.  She addressed it and moved forward.

It is also important for me to continue to develop, learn and contribute. So, I make it a point to invest in myself.  One way that I am doing that is by investing  in my own  life coach. I always say a life coach needs a life coach; just like a therapist needs a therapist.  Life coaches help you evolve by taking an external and objective viewpoint; then helping me, in this case, self-reflect, course correct if needed and adapt.  This is an ever-evolving process but at certain periods in your life you need more than others.  Self-development is important to me; so, another way I invest in myself is by giving back to the community through volunteer projects.   I volunteer by offering services in areas of my expertise to organizations, whether it is marketing, strategy development or plain-old sweat equity. It is important to my well-being to know that I am giving back and showing my gratefulness.

I am working with both for profit and non-profit agencies in lending my expertise to content creation, DEI initiatives and business coaching.  I love that these are interesting, life contributing and changing projects.  If you have a project that you would like external support, please shoot me an email or give me a call and let’s talk.  I would love to know what you’re working on.

Who do you think I am?

I just started a new bi-weekly post series, on Wednesdays, entitled “#Who I Am” to help those of you who don’t know me, get to know me better; and, for those who do know me, to share with you some more specifics about who I am.  This series will focus on both personal and professional aspects of my life.

For me, life is not about compartmentalizing, which I have written an entire blog. You can read it here.  My approach to life is as a whole person which combines both my personal and professional life. I would not have one if it were not for the other.  Yet, for the purposes of this article, I separate the two just to give you a snapshot of who I am since that is the easiest way. Like most working parents, my work-life balance changes daily, I am flexible because change is a reality and adapting is key for me to live within my life.

Professionally, I have created a consulting business that focuses on listening and developing a customized product that is authentic and genuine.  I am authentic because customers receive honesty, clarity and my entrepreneurial spirit as I approach each assignment. I am genuine because customers will not receive my perspective, my services or my product, from anyone else.

While I am known for being authentic and genuine, it is nice to hear it echoed by clients:

A client recently told me who I have been working with for 4+ years:

“Sonya, you never disappoint”.

A new, initially hesitant, client, after working with me, referred an industry colleague to me and wrote in the recommendation email

“I’ve found Sonya to be an honest agent & delivers on the promises she has made me.”

I research, identify, develop and deliver content, connections, and new business. It sounds simple but I offer a strategically thoughtful service that few can replicate.

Personally, I have created a life filled with the people I love the most, my husband and daughter.  I make it a point to thank God for them every day.  Many of you know that I am the youngest of six children. Both of my parents came from huge families, each being one of fourteen children.  I have over 150 first cousins.  Believe me, it makes for a lively and festive family reunion when we do get together!  I am faith-driven and believe in God, the father of Abraham and actively practice my faith.  I am capable, persistent and loyal.  As a wife, mother, daughter, sister, auntie, godmother, cousin and friend I am an encourager-in-chief.  I lift up those I love to let them know they are capable!

This is a little snapshot of #WhoIAm.  Be on the lookout for these posts to learn more about me. Then when you and/or someone you know needs a capable professional to research, identify, develop and deliver content, connections or new business; please feel free to recommend me because I “never disappoint” and I am “an honest agent & deliver on the promises” I make.

What have YOU done for YOU lately?

TopSmead State Forest, Connecticut

The last time I took a pause in writing Sonya’s Blog, my mother died.  This time the silence was to focus on me; specifically, doing things this summer (while the days are longer and warmer) that I normally don’t have and/or make time to do.  I am dedicated to my clients, love what I do and continue to work hard with them daily. The time I traded was for my own product. Sound selfish? I don’t think so. I was doing this for me!

The blog was only suspended for a short period. Today, Sonya’s Blog is back. I’m happy to share that the trade-off was well-worth it.

I intentionally added more love, peace, joy; and, ultimately replenished my soul with sunshine and adventure.  I had fun and here’s what I was able to enjoy:

A DIY Project: I love tall wildflowers at my mailbox and they have been missing for several seasons. I found a tray at my trusty independent nursery, Benedict’s, which I have written about before on Sonya’s Blog.  I planted them; and, now when I turn into my driveway, the flowers bring me joy.

Volunteering:  It was super rewarding because I was able to work alongside my teenage daughter.  I was not only supporting a non-profit with goods and/or financial help which we normally do; but we invested actual sweat equity.  I walked the walk showing my daughter that volunteering is priceless. She also showed me her strength and her passion in working with children. By the way, my daughter logged 35 hours a week for 5 weeks.  I didn’t log anywhere near those hours. Kudos to her!  Check out the organization.  It may be a cause that you want to help support, Horizons at Notre Dame Fairfield.

This is a picture drawn by one of my daughter’s students.

A family gathering:  The pandemic disrupted our every two-year family reunion.  It was resurrected this year but at the last minute; so, many of us were unable to go.  I, along with my sister and niece, planned a family gathering for several families over a three day weekend to meet in the midwest.  We prayed, ate, and talked.  It was an amazing experience to be physically surrounded by so much love!

A mini Ruff gathering!

Art Outing: Most people don’t know this about me but I was one class short of an Art History minor in undergraduate school.  So, I made it a point to plan a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see one of my favorite artist, Winslow Homer.  The exhibit was only available for a limited time so it was extra special that we were able to see it while it was still there.  My family enjoyed it too.

Visiting Connecticut State Parks:  If you follow me at all, you know that I brag on CT State Parks all the time.  They are an amazing refuge; and, while we normally make sure we visit them, this time we were able to do so in the middle of the day.  We particularly loved one that is considered a state forest called TopSmead State Forest.  It’s a beautiful site.

My purpose was to take back some time from my days and invest in myself.  So, the list of adventures, activities and fun listed above are just some of the ways I spent my extra time these past weeks.  My question to you is, what have YOU done for YOU lately?

  • For my family; (siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews); it’s awesome that they just love on me and are so happy whenever they see me.

  • For my deal life-long friends; I have chosen them to be part of my family and they have chosen me to be part of their family too.

  • For my network; thank you for staying connected and sharing your life journey with me.

Guest Blogger, William I. Brazley Jr. Functioning Through Adversity

Are you having a problem staying focused at work? Do you snap at family members for small, insignificant reasons? While driving, have you recently missed a turn, or almost had an accident because you were mentally preoccupied? If so, you’re probably trying to cope with some form of adversity in your life. Adversity is defined as “adverse or unfavorable fortune, or fate; a condition marked by misfortune; calamity or distress; an adverse or unfavorable event or circumstance.”

William I. Brazley Jr.

All of us know someone who has gone through some form of adversity. All of us have been through some form of adversity, whether it was an illness, a death in the family, a troubled marriage, financial difficulties, a school bully, family issues, job pressures, concerns about our children, a broken vehicle, much needed house repairs or a number of other things. It’s ironic that we spend our entire lives trying to avoid adversity, but mental health professionals will tell you that avoiding it completely is practically impossible. In that case, shouldn’t we spend as much time preparing for adversity as we spend trying to avoid it?

How do we prepare for, or successfully function during times of adversity? We practice resilience. Resilience is the anecdote for adversity. Resilience is defined as “the capacity or ability to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” Resilience is not an inherited trait. It’s learned behavior, thoughts and action. That means you can learn to successfully function through adversity.

The first step is to take it one day at a time. Trying to look at the big picture, or playing the “what if” game, can be overwhelming. Dealing with grief, suffering or a difficult issue can put you on an emotional rollercoaster. That’s a ride you should avoid. Don’t look farther than today. Make it through today and then count it as a success. Each day will become an additional success, which will build up over time and your issue won’t seem as overwhelming.

Avoid thinking of a crisis as an insurmountable problem. You can’t stop stressful events from happening, but you can control how you interpret and respond to them. Focus on the things you have control over and keep things in perspective. Avoid blowing the issue out of proportion. Having a good support group of family and friends is important. Accepting help and encouragement from those who care about you strengthens your resilience.

Two things that are very important and help to strengthen your resilience is keeping a positive, hopeful outlook and taking care of yourself. Concentrate on what you want instead of worrying about what might happen. Stay optimistic and don’t neglect your own needs and feelings. Eat right, exercise and do things that you enjoy and find relaxing. Meditation is good for destressing and calming your mind.

Research has shown that resilience is more of an ordinary trait than an extraordinary one. We see it all the time after catastrophic events. Somehow the survivors rebuild their lives and become stronger in spite of what has happened. They are being resilient. Being resilient doesn’t mean that you don’t go through some adversities. It’s the ability to bounce back.

Advice that I am sure you have heard before is to forgive others who may have hurt you, but above all else forgive yourself. This can be freeing and empowering. Self-confidence is also very important. Believe in your own abilities and trust your instincts. Stay positive and remember that nothing lasts forever.

As a child, a good movie was not only William’s source of entertainment; it was his escape from reality. He went to the theatre at every opportunity where he discovered that he loved a good story. But there came a time when those good stories and good movies seemed far and few between. As a self-proclaimed movie critic, he decided to write his own stories. William writes mainly fiction, laced with reality and humor. He has come a long way from college papers filled with red marks, and a professor who told him that he was borderline illiterate. When's your favorite time of the year?

This is my favorite time of the year!

Fat Tuesday kicks off with excitement for the next 40 days.  It is also the beginning of my challenge.  Can I adhere to the promises I have made? Well, I made it this Lenten season!

  • No meat on Fridays (I have to confess, I usually forget at least one Friday but I didn’t!).

  • An intentional effort to be especially kind when the situation is extremely frustrating.

  • Morning meditataion of two companion books with daily scripture readings the last 40 days.

Lenten season is always a humbling experience. This one has not disappointed me. I welcome it each year; I can re-set.

This past Palm Sunday, I was reminded that Easter is coming; and, so is the good weather! The season is yet another reason that I love this time of the year. I believe we all feel renewed with sunshine, warm weather, the flowers blooming and grass turning green.

Most importantly, for me on this Maundy Thursday, I look forward to Sunday.  I recognize that we have to first endure Good Friday.  But, I look to Easter and I am thankful that Sunday we can celebrate and proclaim that “HE is Risen”, HE is Risen Indeed”.

Happy Easter and wishing you and yours warm days full of sunshine!

“There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." Madeleine Albright

This month, throughout March, we celebrate women in history. We celebrate those females who have made a history-making difference; and/or have made a major contribution to making our way of life better.  Women have always made a difference in the lives of their families and communities; but, weren’t given the same civil rights and liberties as men.  Women have been fighting for rights since our country was established.  So, as we celebrate women this month, I hope we do it knowing that most of them accomplished so much with so little – no support, no education, no equal rights and the list goes on.

As I think about past Marches, I started wondering exactly when did we, as a nation, start recognizing Women in History, specifically in March?

Well, are you glad I asked the question?

Originally, the United States started recognizing Women’s History for the week of March 7, 1987; thereafter, in 1995 the government has recognized March as women’s history month. I had the opportunity, pre-Covid, to have a book signing event at the Indianapolis Propylaeum which was the headquarters for women’s suffrage in the 1920s. I was wondering why women’s history is relegated to just one month; but, hey baby, we have made progress from just one week to an entire month!

September 2019: I am at the Indinapolis Propylaeum for my second booking signing event!

All sarcasm aside, thankfully there is recognition for all of the women who have famously contributed to our country’s growth and progress, making it the best country ever!  But, as I think of the women I want to celebrate., I think of the women who I have used as role models like my Grandmother, my Mother, my Aunties (I was blessed to have 12 and that’s not counting the in-laws); my Sister and those that weren’t my blood but undoubtedly loved me and influenced me over the years like my dear Mother-in-Law and a woman that was just like my Grandmother.

September 2019: My sister, Sabrina and I at the Indianapolis Propylaeum.

It’s easy to be honest here, because I have so many wonderful nieces that have come after me who I admire!  I know that they contribute to their families, their communities and out country; and I am so proud of the history and legacy they are producing.  While I truly respect and am thankful for the women that made history in science, technology, sports, the arts and more; my heart tells me to celebrate those that aren’t in the history books but have made history in so many of our lives.

My heart is full, not only, for the month of March, but for each and every day that I celebrate the women making history in my life, in our communities and in so many different disciplines, inventions and areas.  To each and every one of them, I say thank you for your contributions; and know that you are celebrated each day but that the month of March is a special 31 days set aside to recognize your awesomeness!

This blog was being written while I received an alert that Madeleine Albright died.  Her books and political thinking influenced me during my young adult years, and I will be forever grateful for her calm, respectful and to-the-point demeanor.  May she rest in peace as we celebrate that she left this world brighter with her democracy-forward approach.

To all women, celebrating each other – those before us and those after us –

Cheers to Women’s History Month 2022!

Expert Advice of the Month: Mental health in the workplace Part 2: Develop company benefits that address well-being by Sonya Ruff Jarvis

Sonya experiencing CALM in Rockport, MA - Summer 2021

Last month, I wrote about dealing with mental health in the workplace while maintaining profits. It was a chance to address the declining mental health of employees accelerated by the pandemic, with ideas to help normalize mental health issues and demonstrate flexibility and empathy toward employees. This time, we focus on one real tactical suggestion to help companies consider designing benefits that improve employees’ mental health.

Leaders of any type of organization need to be fully involved to defuse the stigma of talking about mental health. Their action has to be purposeful to truly open the lines of communication throughout the organization. It doesn’t help that, in today’s world, companies unintentionally add pressure by expecting employees to be constantly connected.

This is particularly true now when many employees are working remotely. In addition, retail workers are considered to be the employee group suffering the most from mental health issues since the pandemic. According to a report by Retail Trust, 84 percent of retail workers said their mental health declined during the pandemic.

One suggestion is to create a mental health care program that supports the needs of the individual and helps them feel financially secure. How do you get started? Let’s focus on one benefit that is perhaps the easiest to roll out—plus, it’s measurable. Companies have long recognized that engagement around community charities can help build a team feeling while paying for gym memberships can create healthier employees. Both of these benefits result in less absenteeism and more productivity. It’s a win-win.

Now, let’s take that same philosophy and apply it to introducing well-being benefits like calmness and mindfulness. There are a number of larger corporations in the news already applying these types of tactics throughout their organizations. The easiest way to do this is through software applications. Some of the most popular apps include CALM and Headspace for Work. Corporations are seeking their support and rolling out programs to help employees sleep better, manage anxiety, and develop mindfulness.

Most people already use apps. It’s an individual approach that maintains the employees’ privacy. This offers one tactic on how to start creating a mental health care program that supports employees. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Expert Advice of the Month: Dealing with mental health in the workplace while maintaining your profits

Photo taken at Kimpton Nine Zero Boston, Summer 2021

Published: January 26, 2022 by Hardlines HR Advisor Newsletter

The acceleration of mental health issues has forced society to take notice. Now, more than ever, well-being is tied to mental fitness. Prior to the pandemic, very few admitted their mental health issues. Since, many struggling with this disease have spoken out to elevate the conversation. Finally, mental health is starting to be addressed in the workplace.

It’s obvious that the pandemic pushed this topic into the spotlight. Most employees are comfortable discussing physical ailments like allergies, diabetes, cancer diagnoses, and COVID-19 positive results. Yet, many feel judged when sharing a mental illness diagnosis.

A recent article in the Harvard Business Review states that at least 68 percent of millennials (up from 50 percent in 2019) and 81 percent of Gen Zers (up from 75 percent) have left roles for mental health reasons. Mental health challenges permeate organizations affecting C-level roles too.

Regardless of size, many companies can show flexibility and empathy towards employees struggling with mental illness symptoms—without sacrificing profits. Company profits can be maintained by acting on this shift in the workplace. Those profits diminish with low productivity, poor quality of work, job dissatisfaction, and low loyalty, which can all result in critical negative profit measurements such as high absenteeism and turnover.

What can companies do to help employees succeed in managing mental wellness without giving up profits? Ultimately, employees need to feel recognized, supported, and accepted. A mental health diagnosis should not be a stigma. It should be treated like any other illness.

Incorporating a mental health care program into your company’s value system with benefits spelled out would be a start. Yet, it is more than just providing mental health funding. It is an emotional investment too. Employees need to be encouraged, at every level, to talk about the subject to help remove the shame.

Here are some suggestions to help normalize mental health issues and show employees flexibility and empathy:

  • Create a mental health care program that supports the needs of the individual and helps them feel financially secure.

  • Encourage employees to talk about mental health and create a safe space. Consider developing peer groups.

  • Make regular check-ins on mental health status just like with job performance reviews.

  • Train from the top down.

  • Establish supervisor support at every level.

  • For burnout, stress, or long hours, try introducing mindfulness groups or yoga sessions on-site that can help to offer relief.

  • Paid time off should include mental health days.

It remains to be seen whether the pandemic has helped to normalize mental health struggles in the workplace. Companies showing flexibility and empathy towards their employees’ mental health will be the brands that will maintain—and gain—profits by creating a culture of support and acceptance.

How are you delighting your customer?

It is always interesting to me when asked, “What makes your brand experience different”? Companies both large and small always respond, “Our customer service”. Many companies claim great customer service, but few actually deliver.  My family and I were recently delighted by the customer experience we received staying at the Vanderbilt Hotel in Newport Rhode Island, an Auberge Collection.  They exemplified excellence in customer service and our customer experience.

Cozy areas are located through-out the Vanderbilt Hotel - image credit: Jarvis Consultants, LLC

What made the experience at the Vanderbilt Hotel exceptional?

  • I researched online; but called the property to make the reservation.  The reservationists (I will reserve her name for privacy); explained all the options and the feel for the property. We love Newport and had stayed in the town several times but never at this property. I booked one of their suites.  She thanked me and waived the resort fee, explaining that since I called the hotel directly, I was eligible for this discount.

RESULT:  The time patiently spent on the phone and waiving the resort fee, made me feel like a valued (loyal) customer although I had never stayed at this property.

  • I immediately received an email from the Concierge saying that they were looking forward to our visit and if there was anything they could do for us; please do not hesitate to reach out.

RESULT: The follow-up showed me they were serious and wanted to make sure our experience was positive.

  • We arrived earlier than expected, walked up to check-in and before I could introduce myself; the front desk person welcomed me to the Vanderbilt hotel by name.

RESULT: They made us feel famous – knew us before the introduction.

  • While waiting for check-in; the front desk person (not the one waiting on us) saw that my daughter was dressed in NBA/college basketball apparel.  She then told us (name and directions on how to get there) about a local store that specializes in basketball items; and, she thought we might enjoy visiting.

RESULT:  They noticed and cared about something that my daughter valued; and, took an extra step to make a meaningful suggestion to enhance our experience.

  • Waiting for us in our suite was a handwritten welcome note, a fresh flower centerpiece, a bottle of wine; three local bottled sodas and sparkling water.

RESULT:  They WOWED us with these amenities!

  • At check-out, I shared that the hotel property is a lovely place and our suite was absolutely beautiful but the heating system was loud and interrupted our sleep.  The check-out person explained that the hotel was preparing to shut down for the entire month of January where they will remodel which will include the heating/cooling systems that will be replaced.  She apologized for the disturbance and complimented an expensive dinner we had at their onsite restaurant during our stay.

RESULT:  We are coming back to this property; and, it is now our property of choice when we plan to stay in Newport, Rhode Island.

In reality, it is difficult to deliver consistent and uninterrupted customer service; but, every single person we encountered at this property extended themselves to us. Delighting their customer is ingrained in how they approach hotel guests and do their jobs.  Yes, it is difficult to deliver consistent and uninterrupted delightful customer experiences; yet, it is possible.

What are you doing to back up your great customer service claims?  More importantly, how are you measuring them?
