Living & Working with Intention

Like other entrepreneurs, running my own business is a balancing act. There are always deadlines, client expectations, meetings, follow-up, and projects that need to move forward. As an independent contractor and small business owner, there is rarely a moment when work completely shuts off. At the same time, I value being present for the people in my life. Once summer arrives and calendars begin filling with graduations, weddings, vacations, and family gatherings, balancing both worlds becomes even more intentional.

Over the years, I have realized that showing up for family and friends while still delivering on commitments to clients is about creating structure, communication, and priorities.

One thing I know about myself is that relationships matter. I want the people in my life to know they are important and that I am willing to make time for the moments that matter to them. At the same time, I take tremendous pride in the work I deliver to clients. When someone hires me, they are trusting me with their business, their goals, and their timelines. I do not take that responsibility lightly.

The key for me has been learning how to plan ahead instead of constantly reacting.

I review my calendar early and often. I look at upcoming commitments, project deadlines, travel, social events, and personal obligations well in advance so I can manage expectations proactively. I have learned that organization creates calm. When I stay ahead of responsibilities instead of waiting until the last minute, I can be more present both professionally and personally.

Communication also plays a huge role in making this work. I believe clients appreciate transparency and consistency. If timelines need to be adjusted slightly because of scheduling conflicts, I communicate early. If deliverables are ahead of schedule, even better. Being proactive helps eliminate unnecessary stress and allows everyone to feel confident things are still moving forward.

I also think entrepreneurs have to be careful not to confuse constant accessibility with productivity. Just because we can answer emails every minute of the day does not mean we always should. There is value in setting boundaries and allowing yourself to fully engage in the moment you are in. Sometimes that means stepping away from the phone for a few hours and trusting that the work will still be there when you return.

At the end of the day, I do not believe success is only measured by completed projects or professional accomplishments. I believe it is also measured by relationships, memories, and being present for the people who matter most.

For me, intentionally showing up for both clients and loved ones is not always easy, but it is important. And during the busy summer months especially, I am especially reminded that while business matters, the moments shared with family and friends matter too.
